Sitges Beach in Barcelona, located in the Costa Brava seaside town of Sitges in Spain’s Catalonia region, has been crowned the world’s happiest beach. This recognition comes after a comprehensive analysis conducted by CV Villas, a luxury villa rental company, which examined popular beaches worldwide to determine the happiest one.
The methodology employed by CV Villas involved creating a seed list of 103 renowned beaches globally. Subsequently, over 1,000 Instagram photos from each beach were scrutinized using AWS Rekognition software to identify positive facial expressions. Based on the average smile score calculated for each beach, Sitges Beach emerged as the clear winner with a happiness score of 98.42 out of 100.
Described as a beloved destination among locals and travelers alike, Sitges Beach offers a delightful blend of smooth sands, warm waters, and a vibrant promenade. Visitors have praised the beach for its tranquil sea area created by sea walls, fostering a peaceful ambiance for beachgoers.
Spain’s representation on the list doesn’t end with Sitges Beach; Mallorca’s Port de Soller secured the third spot with a smile score of 96.95. The Iberian Peninsula, particularly Spain and Portugal, showcased a penchant for happiness, with several beaches from these regions featuring prominently in the top rankings.
Portugal claimed four spots in the top 20, with Praia da Falésia and Praia Dona Ana ranking second and seventh, respectively. Southern Portugal’s turquoise waters seemed to evoke bright smiles from beach enthusiasts, as captured in Instagram posts.
Other European countries also made a strong showing, with Wales’ Rhossili Bay and Caswell Bay clinching the fourth and fifth spots on the list. Greece, known for its picturesque beaches, boasted five entries, including Elafonisi Beach and Ai Helis in Kefalonia.
Outside of Europe, Cannon Beach in Oregon and Siesta Key Beach in Florida made their mark on the list, emphasizing that a day at the beach is universally cherished for its ability to bring joy. Whether basking in the sun on the shores of Barcelona or strolling along the sandy expanses of Oregon, the sheer pleasure of a beach day is a universal experience worth celebrating.
So, the next time you find yourself on a beach—be it in Spain, Portugal, the United States, or beyond—immerse yourself in the moment, relishing the happiness that these coastal paradises offer to all who seek solace and joy by the sea.
