Today at London Climate Action Week, the Travel Foundation unveiled a groundbreaking initiative titled “Where Next? Big ideas for tourism’s climate transition.” This ambitious project introduced four key concepts aimed at revolutionizing the tourism industry in the face of climate change challenges.
The first idea proposed is the establishment of a global climate risk register tailored for destinations. This open-access platform would offer localized climate risk profiles to aid governments, businesses, and investors in addressing pressing threats effectively and transparently.
The second proposal focuses on phasing out detrimental tourism models while supporting a just transition. By redirecting investments towards low-carbon, community-owned enterprises and reskilling workers, this initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism practices.
The third idea advocates for a climate justice fund dedicated to supporting tourism destinations most impacted by climate change. Governed by frontline communities, this fund prioritizes resources for repair, resilience, and fairness in areas vulnerable to climate-related challenges.
The final concept emphasizes community-led planning and equitable development measures as essential components of sustainable tourism. This includes mandating local procurement, redistributing tax revenues, and ensuring communities have a significant say in tourism growth and investment decisions.
Furthermore, the Travel Foundation highlighted the necessity of international reforms to mitigate emissions within the tourism sector. Suggestions included incorporating international aviation emissions into destination carbon budgets, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies for aviation, and implementing policy measures to manage demand effectively.
The initiative was officially launched at a London Climate Action Week event, garnering support from various tourism and climate stakeholders. The consultation phase will prioritize input from Global South stakeholders and showcase innovative examples of sustainable tourism practices.
Jeremy Sampson, CEO of the Travel Foundation, emphasized the importance of collective action in transforming the tourism industry. The organization plans to engage in a consultation process over the upcoming months, culminating in the presentation of the “Where Next?: Action Agenda” at COP30.
In partnership with Chilean-based Cuidadores de Destinos, the Travel Foundation aims to amplify stories of adaptation and resilience from Latin America and the Caribbean, shedding light on innovative solutions at the grassroots level.
Industry experts, including Nina Boys from Preferred Travel Group and Shannon Guihan from The Travel Corporation, expressed their support for the initiative, recognizing the potential for tourism to lead in climate adaptation and sustainable development.
As stakeholders prepare to contribute to the consultation process and action agenda, the Travel Foundation invites global participation in shaping a more equitable and resilient future for tourism. More details on the campaign can be found on their website.
Established in 2003, the Travel Foundation is a renowned global NGO dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism practices in collaboration with various stakeholders. With a presence in over 30 countries, the organization continues to drive positive change in the tourism industry.
