Thailand’s Tourism Police Bureau has harnessed the power of AI-driven surveillance cameras to crack down on criminal activities in popular tourist spots, leading to a significant number of arrests since the initiative’s inception in July 2024. Pol Lt Gen Saksira Phueakum, the bureau’s commander, highlighted the system’s integration with central databases housing criminal records and warrants, facilitating real-time identification of suspects with pending charges or deemed high-risk.
The deployment of AI cameras has notably resulted in the apprehension of 180 individuals across various tourist destinations, including Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Suvarnabhumi Airport. The offenses range from theft and assault to more severe crimes like attempted murder. Moreover, the technology actively monitors approximately 600 individuals flagged for suspicious behavior, encompassing both local and foreign criminal groups engaged in activities such as pickpocketing and illegal currency exchange.
These high-tech surveillance measures trigger instant alerts to law enforcement as soon as flagged individuals enter monitored tourist zones, ensuring swift responses to prevent potential crimes against both tourists and local residents. Officials are now planning to expand the coverage of AI cameras to encompass all major tourist hubs nationwide, with the primary objective of deterring criminal behavior and bolstering Thailand’s reputation as a secure destination for travelers.
By enhancing security measures through cutting-edge technology, authorities aim to instill greater confidence in tourists while simultaneously fostering a safer environment for local communities. The strategic implementation of AI-driven surveillance not only serves as a crime prevention tool but also contributes to elevating the overall travel experience for visitors exploring Thailand’s diverse attractions.
