Tourism operators in Thailand are advocating for government intervention to address taxi scams and public transport fare issues. The Mastercard Economics Institute study highlighted Bangkok among cities with high rates of taxi and car rental fraud, prompting concerns about the negative impact on the country’s tourism image.
The Thai Public Taxi Association recently voiced opposition to ride-hailing services at airports, citing unfair competition. However, in Phuket, where such services are allowed, the Tourism Council President noted a decrease in excessive fares and improved service standards due to increased competition.
According to Rangsiman Kingkaew, the coexistence of traditional taxis and ride-hailing services in Phuket has been beneficial, offering passengers options with transparent pricing. Unlike Bangkok, Phuket taxis lack a metered fare system, often resulting in higher fares due to return trips for new passengers.
To address long-term transport issues, Rangsiman emphasized the need for investment in a comprehensive mass transit system. While Phuket has some bus services, they are insufficient to meet the demands of both tourists and locals, especially during peak seasons.
Private investors are interested in developing new transportation routes, but bureaucratic hurdles hinder progress. Rangsiman urged the government to streamline concession processes and expedite major projects like the Patong Tunnel and Phuket Tram to enhance the island’s transport infrastructure.
Despite facing challenges like a slowdown in the Chinese market during low season, Phuket aims to sustain tourism by enhancing services and attractions. Rangsiman emphasized the importance of continuous government support and infrastructure upgrades to meet long-term tourism demands.
In addition to marketing campaigns, such as the recent “Sawasdee Nihao” initiative, Rangsiman stressed the significance of improving overall tourism experiences to ensure sustained visitor interest in Thailand.
