The European Conservatives and Reformists group in the European Parliament has decided to expel Luxembourgish MEP Fernand Kartheiser for organizing a trip to Moscow. Kartheiser, a former diplomat and ambassador, was invited by the Russian Parliament to discuss bilateral relations, Russia’s international ties, and the situation in Ukraine. Despite facing criticism from his party members, Kartheiser defended his decision to engage in diplomatic dialogue with Russia, a move that was deemed unacceptable by the ECR group.
The ECR co-Chairmen, Nicola Procaccini and Patryk Jaki, expressed disapproval of Kartheiser’s visit to Moscow, considering it a breach of the group’s principles. The group’s strong stance against Russia’s actions in Ukraine led to the decision to expel Kartheiser, highlighting the group’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. The expulsion process is expected to be finalized in an upcoming group meeting, requiring a majority vote from ECR members.
While the European Parliament has halted official engagements with Russia following the conflict in Ukraine, several MEPs have independently visited the country. Notably, five MEPs participated in Moscow’s Victory Day parade, signaling a personal initiative to maintain diplomatic connections. Calls for renewed dialogue between the EU and Russia have emerged, with Slovenia’s president advocating for diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and promote peace in the region.
Despite the ECR group’s strict position on Russia, individual MEPs continue to engage in personal diplomatic initiatives, emphasizing the complexity of maintaining relations amidst geopolitical challenges. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has heightened tensions between the EU and Russia, prompting divergent approaches within the European Parliament regarding diplomatic interactions with Moscow.
As political dynamics evolve in the aftermath of the Ukraine crisis, the role of MEPs in shaping EU-Russia relations remains a subject of debate and scrutiny. The expulsion of Kartheiser underscores the complexities of diplomatic engagements in a politically charged environment, reflecting the divergent views within the European Parliament on engaging with Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
