When it comes to island paradises, Bali and Fiji have long been go-to destinations for many travelers. However, there’s a new contender in town that is quickly gaining popularity – the Cook Islands, just a five-hour flight from Australia. As we touched down in Rarotonga, the island’s unique charm immediately enveloped us, setting it apart from its more famous counterparts.
With live music welcoming us at customs, it was evident that we were in for a different kind of experience. The locals shared a saying that if Rarotonga was cloudy, Aitutaki would be bathed in sunshine. Intrigued by this, I embarked on a short flight to Aitutaki to explore what this Polynesian paradise had to offer.
Arriving in Aitutaki, the stunning shades of blue visible from the plane window hinted at the beauty that awaited. My accommodation at Resort Tava’e, nestled on the beachfront, provided a serene backdrop for my island retreat. The complimentary kayaks and paddle boards allowed for leisurely exploration of the crystal-clear waters, adding to the tranquility of the setting.
Exploring Aitutaki further, I embarked on a scenic drive around the island, taking in breathtaking views from Piraki Lookout and savoring a meal at the intimate Avatea Cafe. However, the highlight of my trip was a private lagoon tour with Platinum Cruising, where we visited smaller islands, snorkeled among vibrant marine life, and witnessed the famed Aitutaki sunset at Rapae Bay restaurant.
Transitioning to Rarotonga, a livelier island with a perfect blend of tourist attractions and local charm, I checked into the Edgewater Resort & Spa. This family-friendly resort offered a range of amenities, including pools, entertainment zones, and tennis courts, catering to guests of all ages.
Delving into Rarotonga’s culinary scene, I sampled delectable dishes at On The Beach, a beachfront dining spot known for its exceptional food and service. The following day, a Turtle & Eagle Ray tour with Go Local provided an unforgettable snorkeling experience, closely interacting with marine creatures in their natural habitat.
My evenings in Rarotonga were filled with cultural experiences, from a captivating dinner and show at Te Vara Nui Village to a scenic hike with Arore Mountain Adventures, culminating in a hearty meal at Kai & Co. The Koka Lagoon Cruise offered another memorable day, featuring snorkeling, a BBQ lunch on an island, and engaging with the friendly crew.
As my time in the Cook Islands drew to a close, I savored a final dinner at Antipodes, overlooking the island at sunset. Reflecting on my journey, I was struck by the diverse offerings of the Cook Islands, from pristine beaches and vibrant marine life to rich cultural experiences and delectable cuisine.
Whether traveling solo, with family, or friends, the Cook Islands present a treasure trove of experiences for every type of traveler. With Jetstar offering direct flights from Sydney to Rarotonga, paradise is just a short journey away, beckoning with its unspoiled beauty and warm hospitality.
