Delta Air Lines has expanded its international reach from Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport by introducing two new seasonal nonstop routes to Rome, Italy, and Copenhagen, Denmark. These additions highlight the airport’s first-ever nonstop service to Copenhagen, a key European capital and business center. This move underscores the increasing demand for direct international travel options from the Upper Midwest, enhancing global connectivity.
The flights to Copenhagen commenced on May 22nd, followed by the service to Rome on May 23rd. Operating seasonally through the fall, these routes offer travelers enhanced access to Europe during peak travel seasons. With these new connections, Delta now offers nonstop flights from Minneapolis to eight European destinations, significantly boosting the airport’s international profile.
Minneapolis–St. Paul airport has emerged as a major global travel hub in the Upper Midwest, with nonstop flights to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin, and Reykjavík. In 2024, the airport witnessed a record-breaking 3.57 million international passengers, marking a nearly twenty percent increase from the previous year and signaling a full recovery to pre-pandemic international traffic levels.
The airport currently serves thirty-five international cities across twenty countries, surpassing its previous record of thirty-two destinations. Recent additions, such as year-round flights to Frankfurt and the return of Dublin routes, reflect the airport’s ongoing expansion to meet the rising demand for global travel through 2025.
Delta Air Lines plays a pivotal role in Minneapolis’s international expansion, controlling about seventy percent of the market at the airport. The airline’s restoration of nonstop flights to Tokyo Haneda and the introduction of new long-distance routes to cities like Dublin and Sicily have been instrumental in broadening Minneapolis’s international connections.
In addition to European and Asian routes, Delta operates an extensive network from MSP to various cities in Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. This network includes destinations like Calgary, Mexico City, Tulum, and San Juan, catering to diverse travel needs and preferences.
To meet the growing demand, Delta has increased capacity by deploying widebody aircraft on major international routes, contributing to MSP handling 37.2 million passengers in 2024, with international traffic seeing a twenty percent year-over-year increase.
The expansion of nonstop flights to Rome and Copenhagen complements the existing European connections from Minneapolis, solidifying the airport’s position as a key gateway for global travel in the region. These new routes not only offer travelers more options but also highlight the airport’s commitment to enhancing global connectivity and meeting the evolving needs of international travelers.
