The Australian government has maintained a green travel advisory for Korea despite the ongoing political unrest. Following the failed attempt to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, thousands of Koreans took to the streets in Seoul to protest. Despite the turmoil, Australians are advised to exercise normal safety precautions while visiting South Korea, with a specific warning to avoid areas where protests and demonstrations are likely to occur.
Smartraveller, the government travel advisory website, also cautions visitors about potential disruptions to essential services due to demonstrations in major cities besides Seoul. The arrest warrant issued for Yoon has led to a standoff, with the suspended president remaining secluded in his presidential suite under the protection of loyal guards.
The protests in Seoul, with civilians divided in their support for or against Yoon, have added a layer of tension to the already volatile situation. Meanwhile, the tourism industry in Korea has been witnessing a surge in visitor numbers, driven by growing international interest in Korean culture and a shift away from oversaturated destinations like Japan.
In response to the increased demand, South Korea has introduced new tourist attractions like the ‘Moon of Seoul,’ a moon-shaped helium balloon located at Yeouido Park. The country’s tourism appeal was further underscored when it was named InsideAsia Tour’s top destination in 2024, accounting for nearly half of all bookings.
Nicole Newport, the national sales manager of Inside Travel Group, highlighted the sustained interest in South Korea, pointing to the continuous growth in Australian visitor numbers since pre-COVID levels. The country’s ability to attract tourists amidst political upheaval reflects its enduring appeal and diverse offerings that cater to a wide range of travelers.
