In a blow to budget travel to Thailand, AirAsia X will suspend its only low-cost flights between Sydney and Bangkok, less than three months after resuming the route. The decision to halt the service was confirmed by Sydney Airport, marking a setback for travelers seeking affordable options between the two cities.
Thai AirAsia X had reinstated flights between Sydney and Bangkok on December 1, 2024, but will cease operations on February 18, 2025. This move will eliminate the sole low-cost connection between New South Wales and the Thai capital, as well as the only direct service linking Australia to Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport.
The withdrawal of Thai AirAsia X from Sydney will reduce the current six-times-weekly schedule to five flights per week before completely ending later in February. The airline cited operational adjustments as the reason for suspending the direct flight services, emphasizing that such decisions are made to enhance long-term guest service.
Following the cessation of Sydney-Bangkok flights, Thai AirAsia X will focus on serving seven key destinations from Bangkok, including Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Nagoya (all in Japan), Seoul (South Korea), Shanghai (China), and New Delhi (India). The airline’s strategic realignment comes amidst a dynamic landscape in the aviation sector.
Notably, AirAsia’s sister carrier, Indonesia AirAsia, recently announced the resumption of its Darwin-Denpasar (Bali) flights starting in March 2025. This development follows AirAsia’s expansion efforts, such as launching its inaugural service to North Queensland in August 2024 and introducing flights to Africa, connecting Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi (Kenya), in November 2024.
