Embarking on a journey to Cambodia, we eagerly anticipated exploring the marvels of Angkor Wat and its neighboring temples with our young children. Opting for the convenience of a concierge visa service upon arrival, we were swiftly assisted through customs at the Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, a short ride away from the bustling city.
Our adventure commenced with a delightful dinner at the luxurious Anantara Angkor hotel, where we indulged in exquisite meals paired with fine wines. The following day, guided by Sreyneang, we embarked on an enchanting exploration of Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, and other ancient temples, marveling at the intricate carvings and grandeur of these UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Angkor Wat, with its colossal architecture and rich history dating back to the 12th century Khmer Empires, left us spellbound. The remnants of past atrocities, such as missing Buddha statues due to the Khmer Rouge regime, served as poignant reminders of Cambodia’s tumultuous past. Witnessing these ancient works of art defiled was truly heart-wrenching.
After a brief respite for the children and a relaxing pool session, we resumed our temple tour, awestruck by the intricate details of each ancient structure. Evenings were filled with outdoor dining and traditional dance performances, offering us a glimpse into Cambodia’s vibrant culture and culinary delights.
Our itinerary included visits to Banteay Samre Temple, a local village, and the Fair Trade Village in Siem Reap, where we marveled at the local artisans’ craftsmanship. A final sunrise at Angkor Wat and a tuk-tuk excursion to explore the surrounding sites added a perfect finale to our Siem Reap sojourn.
Our stay at Anantara Angkor was a standout experience, marked by exceptional service and delectable cuisine that surpassed our expectations. The warm hospitality of the Cambodian people, coupled with the country’s rich heritage, made our short but unforgettable trip a true paradise.
For those planning a visit to Cambodia, the cooler months of November and December offer ideal weather for temple exploration and sightseeing. It’s a prime opportunity to immerse oneself in the country’s beauty and history at its most inviting.
