A former NSW police officer, Nikki Saroukos, recently shared a harrowing experience of being detained, jailed, and deported from the United States during a visit to her US military husband in Hawaii. Despite traveling legally on a tourist visa, she was treated as a criminal, denied basic rights, and subjected to invasive searches and a night in federal prison.
Nikki, who had visited Hawaii multiple times to see her husband, an active US Army lieutenant, was looking forward to a three-week holiday in Honolulu with her mother. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when a customs officer at Daniel K Inouye International Airport raised concerns during their arrival.
What followed was a series of events that left Nikki and her mother in shock and disbelief. They were taken for questioning, where Nikki offered proof of her marriage and contact with her husband, only to face ridicule and further interrogation.
