What happens if you’re caught with carrying more than 50 cigarettes into Australia

Hi, does anybody know what happens if you are caught carrying more than 50 cigarettes into Australia from another country?
Im heading there from Bali with a work visa and since cigarettes are very expensive in Australia I was thinking Id bring a couple of packs more than the allowed amount in.

From what Ive heard, if you get caught, you get to choose to either pay their tax on cigarettes or to leave the cigarettes at customs. Is this true or are there any bigger repurcussions?
