Traveling to Australia with a friend in November

Were two 23 yr old girls from California going to Australia for 2 weeks and plan on staying in Melbourne and Sydney. Within that time frame is it worth taking a couple days (2-3) to see the GBR?
Are our only options to see it at Cairns or is there any other location that we could get the background closer to Sydney?
