My SO and I are currently on a trip around the world on would love to spend 3 months in Australia. Were planning as we go and will probably be arriving in Australia early February 2016. While looking into options for getting around quite a few questions came to mind so Im hoping you guys can help us out a bit.
1. Internet
Were basically "digital nomads", working while traveling. I run a small business and need to have access to the internet for at least 1 hour a day, preferably more.
In SEA this hasnt been a problem so far using 3G and WiFi at hostels, but apparently mobile internet in Australia is a bit trickier. Are there solutions for this or will we have to stick to certain parts of the country?
2. Route
Coming from Indonesia the cheapest flights are to Darwin and Perth. Things wed love to see and do: Uluru, Great Ocean Road, Melbourne, Sydney (and anything you recommend). After 3 months wed like to end up in a city that has a decently priced flight to New Zealand, so Melbourne or Sydney seem like our best options.
Given that timeframe and the time of year what would be a good route to take? How about internet on that route, what can I expect?
If necessary we can shell out some more money for the flights and get to a better starting point.
3. Getting around
Our first idea was to get a campervan. A home on wheels sounds great. We can sleep, cook, work and it can get us around.
But maybe wed be better off getting a normal car? Or a 4WD, allowing us to explore more? Wed have pay more for accommodation then however, so it might end up more expensive?
4. Buying vs Renting
Next problem is how to get that car or campervan. Should we rent or buy?
Renting is obviously a lot less paperwork and allows us to arrive stress-free. But its quite expensive and even then it seems like you dont always get your moneys worth.
Renting also puts some constraints on our route. We need to start at a pickup point (seems like Darwin is not an option with most rental companies closed from January to March) and end at a drop off point (although most seem to have one in Melbourne and Sydney).
In an ideal situation you can buy a campervan/car and sell it for just a little less 3 months later which would be a lot better budget wise. It adds a lot of work though at the beginning and end of the trip, having to find a good one and sell it again. Im also not that much of a car person so would have to rely on the expertise of others to assess its worth.
Im also not sure where wed best start our trip if well go for buying. I assume some cities have more availability than others? Maybe in this case it would be best to start and end in the same city, regarding paperwork?
5. Budget
Spending around 100 AUD per day on the getting around and accommodation part would be ideal. Is that feasible? Less would be even better, of course.
TL;DR: Planning Australia is leaving me with a ton of question marks
