Is rail travel a good option from a convenience and cost point of view? And are monthly/multi ride tickets the way to go?

Will I have any issues getting a prepaid SIM card with a local number and reasonable data cost? Specifically will an unlocked phone from Australia work and what documentation would I need?

Any other practicalities that would make things run smoothly or tips in general are welcome.
