First time traveling to Bangkok

Hello all!

Pleasure to meet all of you! I was recently informed by my company that I will be traveling to Bangkok for 1-2 days – all work related. The dates will most likely be between May 8th-May 14th. So, Ive traveled quite a bit, specifically to Latin America (accompanied), Europe (unaccompanied/accompanied), and to the NZ/Australia (unaccompanied). This will be my first time traveling to Southeast Asia and I will either have a layover in Hong Kong or Tokyo. For this trip I will be unaccompanied and I was wondering on the local political situation in Bangkok? I know this sounds naive but, traveling got harder when family became more concerned and paranoid about the world. Id like to know how did unaccompanied female travelers feel in the area? Ideas on what to see during the few hours I will have to explore the area and where would you recommend exchanging currency?
