Husband and I are what people call "flash packers": we cover a lot of ground on short trips and visit a variety of places. Were rarely off the beaten path, but in some countries, even the most common tourist destinations can be a bit rough to get to. I like having a small wheeled suitcase with optional back pack straps for just such occasions. I like having the option (though I rarely take it) of taking my suitcase as a carry-on. Ive been using a High Sierra 3-in-1 for the past 4 years and it held up surprisingly well considering how cheap it was. However, its death knell has rung and a tear has begun.
How do others feel about the 3-in-1 style? I used the detachable backpack quite a bit in the beginning but its pretty low quality on the High Sierra model so now I mostly use a Columbia backpack or just carry my camera case. Im looking at the Osprey Meridian, but thats a bit out of my price range (the husband and I will most likely begin having kids in a couple of years, and I might not get as much use out of it then). Any one have a idea somewhere between those? Or know where to get the Osprey cheaper?
Im also thinking that I could just ditch the detachable backpack, but then Im afraid that I couldnt do the carry-on option in a pinch, or I wouldnt have enough space when not carrying on. Advice on a packing system that keeps things economic? Summer time is no problem, but bulky winter clothes can be a bummer. Your collective advice is appreciated!
