Any risks to a heathen westerner (me) having a stop-over in the middle east

Posted on December 28, 2015 | in Travellers Questions | by

Im living in Europe right now and planning a trip to Australia in 2016 to see my family. Its significantly cheaper to fly with Qatar or Eithad than any of the airlines that Im familiar with which has EU only connections. My only reservation is that Im a little concerned about stopping over in Qatar or the UAE. Im not religious, I have pre-marital sex, I drink and Im OK with gay people. I know that Im probably blowing this way out of proportion, but Ive never been to the middle east and dont really have interest in being there or having complication with their border or customs people.

Do I need a Visa to transit either UAE or Qatar? Do they speak English during the flight at at the connecting airports?
